Summers Past…2011

We celebrated our tenth concert season in 2011. We had commemorative t-shirts designed and made, and gave one to each of the LHS students that performed for us at the first concert of the summer. We also made them available to concert goers! We had a super line-up of performers for the summer. We only had two concerts in the LHS cafeteria due to bad weather, which was very good.

We would like to thank the season’s sponsors for enabling us to put on the concerts for Londonderry. We sincerely appreciate it!

4-June – Londonderry High Music Showcase featuring Jazz Lab, Rock Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble Groups

We always start out the concert season right –  and that means with our own jazz bands! This is the last concert for the Seniors in the band, and it is always a wonderful evening. This year, for the first time, we are including a performance by the new LHS Rock Orchestra. This is a show that you don’t want to miss!

Special Night! The LHS Math Team will be manning a concessions stand and offering lots to eat, so bring your appetites!

15-June – Tripping Lily

You only have to hear them once to become fans of Tripping Lily. Their music has been featured on Showtime’s “The Big C”, their music has went to #1 on WUMB in Boston and you might have seen them at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival as emerging artist in 2010.  This young quartet might be described as a string band with pop music sensibilities, or perhaps a cutting edge vocal quartet with acoustic instruments. The Boston Globe called the band”….a genre unto itself.”

22-June – LHS Grad Night

This year’s seniors Josh Brennan, Adam Rhan, Jake Bolles and more will entertain us with marimba, guitar and song for this special evening. Matt Leonard, EJ Lee (with a special guest!) return from college to perform. We started LHS Night last year, and it was so popular that we are bringing it back. Come and listen to some of the best performers from LHS!

29-June – Blues Brothers Next Generation

This 10-piece band, including a horn section, will knock your socks off! Hear the fabulous Blues Brothers songs, played the way they should be played. This band both sounds great and is a blast to watch in concert!

06-July – NO CONCERT

13-July – David Milazzo Quartet

From the moment he discovered his father’s alto saxophone on the kitchen table, picked it up and blew a fully matured tone at the age of 9, to his parents’ wondering ears, David Milazzo has been wowing peers, teachers, and audiences, alike. Come to hear a mixture of traditional, modern and funk jazz in the styles of Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Paul Desmond, and many other saxophone masters. David and his crew will “wow” you with a night of jazz!

“This may be the best act you see this year – anywhere! In twenty years of hosting open mics I have never seen a standing ovation for a two song set until these guys got 100+ folks on their feet with rousing and enthusiastic applause!” – Robert Haigh, Host of Tupelo Music Hall’s Open Mic Night.

20-July – Liz Longley

Just a few months after graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2010, Liz Longley was already showing signs of becoming the next acoustic powerhouse. Last year alone, Liz was awarded the 2010 BMI John Lennon Scholarship, 2010 Grand Prize International Acoustic Music Award (amongst 9,000 entries), 2010 Chris Austin Songwriting Award and appeared at the Newport and Rocky Mountain Folk Festivals. We are honored to welcome back one of our favorite performers!

27-July – Merrily James and Band

Merrily grew up in Seattle, where she learned to sing by touring with the Total Experience Gospel Choir, and later formed her own 7-piece funk band called “The Bucket of Soul.” At age 17 she was picked up by “Showtime at the Apollo” and had the audience singing along with her to Aretha Franklin on the national TV series hosted by Sinbad.
A recent graduate of Berklee College of Music, Merrily has performed for Linda Ronstadt and Smokey Robinson and has shared the stage with Bobby McFerrin, Phillip Bailey (Earth, Wind, & Fire), Don Was, and Rocco Prestia (Tower of Power). She was selected as the sole performer for Google’s Grand Opening Celebration (Cambridge) in 2008 and has been featured with the New York Songwriters Circle.

03-August – The Coconut Monkeys

Calling all Jimmy Buffett fans! The Coconut Monkeys cover lots of Jimmy B’s hits, along CSN, Van Morrison and many others. All of them “Songs You Know By Heart”! This will be a fun summer evening – and be sure to wear your Hawaiian shirt!

10-August – All Summer Long

This group performed at Concerts On The Common back in 2004 and they were fantastic! We end our tenth summer of concerts with the perfect harmonies of the ultimate Beach Boys cover band. Check out their website to listen to just how close to the original recordings they sound  –  “Just close your eyes and you’re hearing the Beach Boys!”  Come for an evening of great music and a show the whole family can enjoy!
